Specifics

To be eligible for scholarships administered by the Marcus Foster Education Institute, all applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application for the coming academic year by the March 2nd priority deadline.
  • Plan to attend a four-year, two-year or trade/technical postsecondary program in the fall following high school graduation (Must attend full time).
  • Have a letter of recommendation from an adult that can speak on your experiences.
  • When awarded, recipients must attend an orientation and MFEI scholarship persistence events.

MFEI Scholarship Application:

This scholarship application is open to Bay Area high school seniors in the Oakland Unified School District, the Pleasanton Unified School District, children of employees of the Port of Oakland and Black young men graduating from any high school in the 9 Bay Area counties.

Completing this application places students in the pool for all MFEI awards for which they are eligible. These awards may include, but are not limited to, the College Bound Brotherhood, all Port of Oakland awards, Clorox Partners Awards, and many others.

I EXIST, I PERSIST

The Marcus Foster Education Institute (MFEI) is administering its I EXIST I PERSIST Scholarship award to current college students who were prior MFEI scholarship recipients. I EXIST exemplifies how our students are here transforming their marginalized communities into a college going landscape . I PERSIST illustrates and validates the lived experiences of our students in their post-secondary career and the sustainable efforts they have taken in order to succeed. The focus of this scholarship is to advocate for and celebrate our students in existing and persisting through college. Students who have overcome barriers and challenges during their first year of college are highly encouraged to apply.

There are multiple I EXIST I PERSIST awards available scholarship awards at $2,000 for students attending a 4-year school and $1,000 for students attending 2-year programs.

Eligibility Requirements
•Must be a previous Marcus Foster Education Institute Scholarship recipient.
•Graduated from an Oakland Unified School District public or charter high school in 2014, 2015 or 2016.
•Completed the 2017-2018 FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application by the March 2nd priority deadline.
•Currently attend a four-year institution, two-year institution, or trade/technical program with plans to continue in the Fall of 2017.

Making REAL Change Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund is a diverse community investment fund of awards that may vary from year to year. Most recently the funds include a collection of the following awards from the generosity of donations from companies, organization and individuals: Clorox Partners and Clorox Craig Sullivan awards, Cornell C. Maier awards, the Oakland Education Association awards, the Kathleen and James D. Saddler Memorial, the Nguyen Family award, Oakland Athletics, Caroline Yee and Barbara Ray Styles Memorial Awards, among others.

Additional Requirements:

  • Currently an Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) high school senior.
  • Attended an OUSD public or charter school for at least the last two years.

College Bound Brotherhood Scholarship "Bound for Greatness"

The College Bound Brotherhood is the first network in the nation focused explicitly on young Black men that connects individual students to college readiness programs and improved school district resources. The aim of the College Bound Brotherhood is to increase the number of Black young men from the San Francisco Bay Area who successfully complete college.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be a Black man.
  • Currently a senior in a high school within the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma.
  • When awarded, recipients are required to attend the College Bound Brotherhood graduation ceremony, along with the MFEI orientation and MFEI persistence events.

Port of Oakland Scholarship and Port of Oakland, Children of Port Employees (COPE) Scholarship

The Port of Oakland Employee’s Scholarship Program is an employee-organized, employee-funded program administered by the Marcus Foster Education Institute (MFEI), a non-profit Oakland organization dedicated to supporting the Oakland Unified School District. Awards range from $1500 to $5000 per student.

Additional Requirements:

  • For COPE: Your parent or legal guardian is a Port of Oakland Employee.
  • For Port-OUSD: Currently an Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) high school senior.
  • For Port-OUSD: Attended an OUSD public or charter school for at least the last two years.
  • A 2.5 GPA is required for the community college/vocational school award and a 3.0 GPA for all other awards.

Clorox Partners – Pleasanton Unified School District Scholarship

These scholarships are directed to students in Pleasanton, where Clorox has its corporate headquarters and a large research facility, respectively, as we believe in investing in the communities where we operate. Clorox Company employees have fundraised for scholarships for these awards and the awards directed via the Making REAL Change Scholarship Fund since 1992.
